Towards a diverse, equitable, and inclusive future
Growing up in the suburb of the least developed province in southern China, as a child I never thought about the possibilities of studying at the most prestigious universities across three continents. For me, attending those universities is more of a privilege than what people sometimes call "educational attainment". Because it would not have possible without the support of my parents and the great mentoring I received from advisors who root for my success. These two things are often non-existent for many young students who are more intelligent and diligent than I. The more aware I become of the fact that many students (especially those from minority groups and developing countries) do not have access to guidance on graduate studies, the more I want to contribute in my way. Therefore, for those of you who read this page, either undergraduate students who want to know more about applying for graduate schools, or new graduate students seeking advice/heads-up on what to expect in graduate school, my inbox is wide open for you.
As a junior student researcher in the world of academia myself, my capacity as a "mentor" (double-quoted as I consider myself more of a friendly peer than mentor) is rather limited, so I would like to invite fellow graduate students and young academics to join me in offering guidance and support to other underprivileged students who want success as much as we do. Please also free free to drop me an email if there is a program where volunteer mentorship is needed from junior researcher.
Professor Jack Baker from Stanford University maintains a webpage where he writes some great advice articles on navigating graduate schools, effective writing, the peer review process, attending conferences, and so many more. I strongly recommend his advice articles as I personally benefitted a lot from those articles and regard him as my role model for not only research but also for promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in academia.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to your emails,
